Twenty-two
If only last night had been another nightmare, Emma thought on a groan. With her eyes still closed, she shook off the last tendrils of her actual nightmare. She had dreamed of being stabbed a mere seven times after having dragged herself out of Roganâs arms and into her own bed roughly around two oâclock last night. Though she still reeled from the pain of those wounds, it was a breeze compared to the guilt consuming her.
Heâs trying to imprison Liz.
And you know, he kidnapped me.
Though for some insane reason that last one wasnât nearly as important.
She had thrown herself at him like a crazed schoolgirl in a desperate attempt to forget everything that had happened. Of course, she had been shot at by people who had turned out to not be the mafia, had survived a horrifying vampire attack, rescued a dog that happened to be freaking Cerberus, had fallen out of a plane only to be caught by a giant eagle that used to be a man, and had learned that she wasnât, in fact, human after all â something she had believed for a full twenty-two bloody years. So was it really any wonder she had wanted to turn off her mind for a moment? Emma had no idea how much more of this she could take.
But she couldnât fall apart, not yet. Elizabeth needed her. If Emma could just hold on to that thought, then she would be able to get through this. Hopefully.
When she finally rolled out of bed, she gave a languish stretch toward the sky. She flexed her arms high above her to help ease some of the tension knotted deep in her back. She might be able to heal quickly from physical wounds, but it seemed she did not have the same skillset when it came to the effects of stress. As she released her arms on a deep exhale, she cracked open her eyes. The sight that greeted her had her freezing with her hands still above her head.
Rogan sat on the edge of his bed, his chest free of the blanket...and a shirt, she noticed with an unwanted flash of desire. The urge to lower her gaze to see if he wore boxers was strong enough to sting her cheeks. His lips curled up in a smile as if he could read her thoughts. The hungry call of his eyes bore so deeply into hers she could almost feel him already inside her. And not just the pumping of his fingers sheâd been so close to feeling last night.
She swallowed as the want to finish what she had started beckoned to her very soul, her past and present and future embarrassment be damned.
His eyes dipped to her chest.
Shooting to her feet, Emma crossed her arms and darted to the bathroom. Once she slammed the door shut behind her, she collapsed on the toilet seat and tried to convince herself that she wasnât attracted to a ridiculously attractive man. Her repeated phrase of âhe kidnapped youâ wasnât working though.
